Different Forms of Employment at WIS
At WIS, the type of contract we can offer depends on where you are based. Because our main legal entity is registered in Malta, the rules differ for employees based locally versus those working remotely from other countries.
1. Employees (Malta-based)
If you live and work in Malta, you can be hired as a full-time employee under a standard employment contract.
- Social security and taxes: WIS, as the employer, covers the employer’s share of social security contributions and withholds your income tax and employee contributions directly from your salary.
- Benefits and protections: You are entitled to all statutory rights and benefits under Maltese law — including paid vacation, sick leave, maternity/paternity leave, and public holidays.
- Method of work: Hybrid (minimum 2 days from the office per week but may vary based on role)
This is the most secure and regulated form of employment, providing both financial stability and employment protection.
2. Contractors (Outside Malta)
If you are based outside Malta, we can only engage you under a contractor agreement on a self-employed / business-to-business (B2B) basis.
- Your responsibilities: You would need to register as self-employed or operate through your own legal entity (e.g. limited company or freelancer registration) in your country. As a contractor, you are responsible for paying your own taxes and social security (or national insurance) contributions in accordance with your local laws.
- How payment works: Contractors issue a monthly invoice for services rendered, based on the agreed hourly rate and total hours worked. You are paid only for the hours or deliverables specified in your contract — there is no entitlement to paid time off, sick leave, or other employee benefits.
- Method of work: Fully Remote
We do, however, try to offer our contractors flexibility where possible, so please discuss this with your recruiter if you’d like to understand how we manage time off and breaks in practice.
3. What You Should Do
If you are not based in Malta:
- Please speak to your recruiter early in the process to clarify how the contractor setup works for your situation.
- Do your own research (or seek local advice) on taxation, social security, and business registration requirements in your country.
- Ensure you understand what contributions and costs you will be responsible for, as this directly affects your net income and rate expectations.
WIS cannot provide country-specific tax or legal advice, but we are happy to explain how our side of the contractor relationship works so you can plan accordingly.
